Why Sleep Is the Foundation of Human Health
There are five natural lifestyle changes that anyone can implement to improve the quality, quantity, and efficiency of sleep. But before diving into those strategies, it is absolutely crucial that we understand the importance of sleep.
This is an overview of the subject, and I want to explicitly emphasize that it is just that—an overview. I could easily write a 20-page informational essay on sleep, and it would still only be a summary without the nuanced detail this field deserves. Think of this as a view from the forest, not from the trees.
Sleep: The Most Underrated Health Factor of the Last Millennium
Sleep has been, in my opinion, one of the most overlooked health pillars of the last thousand years, only recently gaining mainstream attention.
Historically, health topics were only widely promoted if they could be monetized. Sleep had no product attached to it—no supplement, no device, no quick fix—only strategy and discipline. In that sense, it resembles fasting, another practice now well understood to have profound biological benefits.
We are now in an age of information abundance. The cost of knowledge is near zero. Sleep has effectively become “open-sourced”—widely available, yet still underutilized, not because the information is missing, but because it has not been deeply understood or applied.
My goal here is simple: to show you why sleep is foundational, and in future writing, to explore how to strategically improve sleep quality and long-term healthspan.
The True Foundation of Health
When most people think about health, they think of diet and exercise. That is not wrong—but it is incomplete.
Health is often described as a triad: nutrition, exercise, and sleep. However, sleep is not just one pillar among three. It is the foundation that determines how well the other two function.
What Sleep Actually Does in the Body
Most adults require 7–9 hours of sleep per night. Sleep is not passive—it is an active biological repair state.
During sleep, the body repairs organs, including the brain, restores tissues and cellular structures, clears metabolic waste, and regulates inflammation while supporting immune system recalibration.
At a microscopic level, sleep influences everything from cells to organ systems.
Inflammation plays a central role in this process. Chronic inflammation is strongly associated with chronic disease, cellular dysfunction, neurodegeneration, and cancer progression.
When sleep is consistently insufficient, inflammation accumulates across systems, gradually shifting the body toward disease.
Sleep Deprivation and Chronic Disease Risk
Chronic sleep restriction is not benign—it is biologically active harm.
Sleeping fewer than six hours per night is associated with a significant increase in risk of dementia, cardiovascular disease, and hypertension.
Even a single night of poor sleep can elevate blood pressure and increase CRP, a key inflammatory marker used in clinical medicine.
After just one week of sleeping five to six hours per night, insulin sensitivity declines significantly, increasing the risk of diabetes. Hunger and satiety hormones become dysregulated, leading to increased cravings for high-calorie foods and subsequent weight gain, which further drives inflammation.
Sleep and the Immune System
Sleep is a core regulator of immune function.
Individuals sleeping fewer than six hours per night are significantly more likely to become ill after viral exposure. Vaccine antibody response is reduced, and natural killer cell activity can drop dramatically after sleep deprivation.
Sleep is not just restorative—it is immunological maintenance.
Mental Health and Cognitive Function
Sleep is equally critical for brain and emotional health.
Chronic short sleep doubles the risk of depression and increases anxiety and emotional instability. It also reduces prefrontal regulation of the amygdala, the brain’s emotional processing center.
This results in impaired decision-making, increased emotional reactivity, and reduced stress tolerance.
Sleep Deprivation and Mortality Risk
Overall, habitual sleep deprivation significantly increases systemic inflammation and all-cause mortality risk.
Sleep is not optional. It is biologically mandatory.
Sleep vs Other Lifestyle Factors
A powerful illustration of sleep’s importance is this.
A human can survive for years without exercise and for extended periods with poor diet. However, without sleep, severe cognitive impairment occurs within 24 hours, hallucinations may begin within days, and prolonged deprivation can lead to psychosis and death.
Sleep is one of the most immediate survival requirements of human biology.
A Cultural Misunderstanding of Sleep
In some countries, dementia is even referred to as “type 3 diabetes,” reflecting its inflammatory and metabolic roots.
Unfortunately, modern culture often glorifies sleep deprivation. Energy drinks have become normalised, and people often take pride in how little sleep they got the night before.
This reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of human biology.

By respecting sleep, we do not just extend lifespan—we improve healthspan and cognitive quality of life.
Sleep is one of the most powerful tools for preventing chronic disease, especially those driven by inflammation, including dementia.
